HPV DNA Testing vs. Pap Smear

Traditionally, Pap smears have been used to screen women for cervical cancer. However, research has found that among every 10 women who test positive for HPV 16 or 18 through HPV DNA testing, even if their Pap smear results are normal, 1 may ultimately be confirmed to have precancerous cervical lesions. This is because a Pap smear detects whether abnormal cells are already present, and such changes may only become detectable at the precancerous stage.

Since it can take several years for an HPV infection to develop into precancerous cellular changes and eventually cervical cancer, patients may otherwise miss the critical window for timely follow-up or closer monitoring after an HPV infection is identified.。
